ADA Flat/Inclined Surfaces

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) establishes accessibility requirements for new construction and alterations of state and local government facilities. ADA flat and inclined floor surfaces along accessible routes must be stable, firm and slip resistant*.

Guidelines for Coefficient of Friction (COF)

  • ADA Flat Surfaces 0.60
  • ADA Inclined Surfaces 0.80
  • OSHA 0.50
  • NFPA 0.68

*Slip resistance is based on the frictional force necessary between the shoe and walking surface.
